We have several workshops coming up around the topic of Blue Ocean Strategy. Business leaders often reassess their strategies as the economic environment begins to shiver. This pain and uncertainty are particularly apparent with the abundance of change and the degree of uncertainty we feel today. Consider the challenges of change as opportunities for, as I often say, “creating a new sandbox.” Just thinking “outside of the box” is difficult when we are watching our “box” shrivel. People want certainty, which is not easy in uncertain times.
How can a Blue Ocean Strategy be of help? Five important key thoughts to help you reframe your strategy:
- Are you competing in an established market or creating a new one? At certain times, you might need to identify unmet needs and create innovative solutions.
- Does innovation feel like just adding one more service or expanding the product offering? Think again. It is time to add value in new ways, innovatively, but without just more of the same, cheaper.
- Protect your current clients, but listen carefully to their unmet needs. Anticipate their challenges and work with them to solve them. You can go farther together.
- What about all those new markets that are emerging—whether because of new technologies, demographic trends, or geopolitical changes? Step back and ask yourself what we can do to capitalize on these markets.
- Finally, please make the competition irrelevant. Stop looking at what others are doing. Lead without limits.
